Austria

The Republic of Austria is a landlocked country situated in southern Central Europe . It was established after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, which occurred at the end of the First world war.

Austria in the North it borders with Germany and Czech Republic . in the West Switzerland and Liechtenstein . to the South are the borders with Italy and Slovenia . on the East the country borders with Slovakia and Hungary . The length of the state borders of Austria with these countries is 2.706 km, of which 816 km with Germany, 466 km with the Czech Republic, 107 km with Slovakia, 354 km with Hungary, 330 km with Slovenia, 430 km with Italy, 166 km with Switzerland and 35 km with Liechtenstein. The total area of the country is 83.858 sq km.

Administratively, the country consists of 9 Federal lands . Burgenland, Carinthia, lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna (as the earth).

The capital of Austria is Vienna . The state is located in mountainous areas. Most of the territory of the country is occupied by the Eastern Alps . which is lower and wider West. In addition, these mountains are characterized by a larger number of forestsand meadows, but the glaciers are smaller. The border between them runs along the Western border of the state along the valley of the upper Rhine. In the North these mountains bordering Northern Alpine foothills . and in the East from the Eastern Alpine foothills. Part of this includes the foothills of the Vienna and Styrian basins . Further to the East it passes into the Hungarian plain .

In the Eastern Alps less glaciers, more forests and meadows, than in Western. The plains account for only 7% of the country.

The largest and the only navigable river of Austria is the Danube . Its length on the territory of Austria is about 350 km It flows from Passau on the German border to the suburbs of Bratislava in Slovakia. The main tributary of the Danube in Austria is considered to be Inn .

The country has a large number of lakes, there are thermal springs with warm water. Most of them are in the countryside of the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria and in Styria and Salzburg .

The highest mountain peak of the country – the Grossglockner High Tauern, height 3797 m . There is also a large number of other high peaks. The largest glacier of the Eastern Alps is the name of Pacience . its length exceeds 10 km .

The most famous massifs of the Central Alps are: Vacation, Ötztal, Zillertal, Kitzbühel Alps, the Hohe Tauern and Semmering .
